Seaspray, a Gulf-front community, sits at the far east end of Okaloosa Island. It is one of the last developed properties before entering the Gulf Islands National Seashore and continuing onto Destin. It is clear why this stretch of beach is perfect for unforgettable stays along the emerald water of the Gulf of Mexico. However, why was this location originally chosen and used by the nearby Air Force base in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, in the mid-1960s to early-1970s?
Join us as we explore the history of Seaspray Beach Vacation Rentals and the surrounding area. See why our little slice of paradise is so special today ... and is the ideal destination for your next beach getaway (or longer).

Seaspray History
1964-1965
In March of 1965, the United States sent its first combat troops into Vietnam, escalating the conflict into the Vietnam War as many of us know it. During that same time frame, from 1964 to 1965, Seaspray’s original townhouse-style structures were built under FHSA rules.
1965-1973
Through the late 1960s and into the early 1970s, the United States Air Force used the original townhomes on the Seaspray site as a respite facility for service members returning from Vietnam.
1973-1978
This facility was purchased in 1973 by a developer, who then fully renovated the buildings and transitioned the property into a condominium complex. The units were then sold to private owners, with the last condo sold in 1978. At that time, the Association took over the operation of Seaspray.

1978-Present
Today, many of the original owners and their descendants still own a home at this nostalgic Okaloosa Island icon. Seaspray Beach Vacation Rentals maintains its authentic Florida charm while offering an updated, elevated beach experience for owners and guests. With 89 units available as short-term and long-term vacation rentals, visitors and owners from around the world can enjoy the bliss of the Emerald Coast.
Each unit is beautifully decorated and equipped with modern conveniences. Our clean, updated grounds offer incredible amenities, including a large pool, a grilling & picnic area, a playground, secure beach access, a fitness center, and much more.

We are proud to offer a relaxing beachside destination for active-duty military, veterans, and their dependents. These guests can enjoy all the wonders of a beach vacation, with the convenience of an Air Force base and its amenities nearby.
Early Okaloosa Island Attractions
Throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, the Emerald Coast rose in popularity among beachgoers, fishermen, and developers. There are several noteworthy attractions and points of interest from Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island's bygone years.
The Billy Bowlegs Festival: This iconic pirate-themed festival was founded in 1956 and remains one of the most popular annual events in the area. Held each May, you can enjoy the swashbuckling fun during your next spring visit.
Sand Skiing: Did you know that Okaloosa Island once featured a popular water flume and "sand skiing" down the coastal dunes?
Indian Temple Mound Museum: This ancient archeological site has been showcasing the area's deep history for generations. Today, the site is part of the Heritage Park and Cultural Center, located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, Fort Walton Beach.
Downtown Fort Walton Beach: This area, including Main Street and Brooks Plaza, was the bustling hub for daily shopping before the heavy commercial development of later decades. After a recent revitalization, downtown once again offers a fantastic selection of restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and entertainment.
Brooks Bridge: Today, it is a four-lane steel-and-concrete structure that carries US Highway 98 over Santa Rosa Sound. However, the Brooks Bridge has humble origins as a 1935 low-level, steel-truss swing bridge. It became increasingly unreliable with age and caused major traffic bottlenecks during peak tourist and fishing seasons. The bridge was replaced by a newly constructed structure from 1965 to 1966.
Nightlife: A vibrant nightlife and disco scene once thrived in the Fort Walton Beach area. It drew a mix of locals, vacationers, and young military personnel stationed at the nearby Air Force base.
Wayside Park: Located on Okaloosa Island, this spot once served as a popular hippie and local hangout, famous for its beachside park benches, picnics, and inclusion in publications like High Times.
Okaloosa Island Pier: The original fishing pier was built in 1972 and extended 962 feet into the Gulf. It was a fantastic way for visitors to go fishing or to enjoy a stroll. Unfortunately, this pier was destroyed in 1995 by Hurricane Erin, but was rebuilt and reopened in 1998. Today, the Okaloosa Island Pier remains a popular attraction where fishermen reel in Tarpon, King Mackerel, Bluefin, Red Drum, Cobia, Bonito, and more.
